New Paul McCartney album set for February 2012 release

December 20, 2011

A new Paul McCartney album – featuring cover versions of ‘Great American Songbook’ standards that he grew up with – will be released on 6 February 2012.

The as-yet-untitled album is expected to provide a glimpse into “the songs which inspired the songs” that McCartney has written over the years.

Produced by Tommy LiPuma, it features Diana Krall and her band, and also includes Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder on two brand new McCartney songs.

It’s an album that Sir Paul, 69, says he has been thinking about making for more than 20 years. “I’ve wanted to do it forever,” he says. “In the end it was ‘Look, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never do it.”

Rolling Stones set to reunite for 50th anniversary tour in 2012?

Keith Richards has fuelled speculation about the Rolling Stones reuniting for a 50th anniversary tour in 2012 after confirming that he, Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts will meet for rehearsals in London later this month.

“Mick’s welcome, and I’m sure he’ll turn up,” Richards told The Observer newspaper.

“We’re just going to play a little together, because we haven’t played for three or four years. You don’t necessarily want to rehearse or write anything – you just want to touch bases. That’s a good start: me, Charlie and Ronnie.”

Led Zeppelin IV turns 40

November 8, 2011

Forty years ago today, Led Zeppelin released their legendary fourth album, featuring their classic track ‘Stairway To Heaven’.

No title was printed on the sleeve, so it became known as Led Zeppelin lV, following the naming standard used by the band’s first three studio albums. However, it is also often referred to as The Runes or Four Symbols because of the ancient runes and symbols depicted on the cover.

On its release, Led Zeppelin IV became an instant success. It entered the UK album chart at No. 1 and stayed on the chart for 62 weeks, becoming the greatest critical and commercial success of the band’s career.

The album is now recognised as one of the most successful albums of all time, having sold some 32 million copies worldwide. It has sold over 23 million copies in the United States alone, making it the third best-selling album ever in the US.

In 2003, the album was ranked 66th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In 2010, the British postal service, Royal Mail, included Led Zeppelin IV in a new set of stamps featuring classic album covers from the last 40 years.

Guitarist Jimmy Page, who also helped to design the artwork for the album, says: “Forty years after the album came out, nobody knows the old man who featured on the cover, nor the artist who painted him. That sort of sums up what we wanted to achieve with the album cover, which has remained both anonymous and enigmatic at the same time.”

Cliff Richard may stage Las Vegas show with Olivia Newton-John

November 1, 2011

Sir Cliff Richard is reportedly in talks with Olivia Newton-John to stage a series of shows together in Las Vegas.

Over the past six decades, the 71-year-old singer has had hits all over the world and has sold over 250 million records worldwide. But he has so far failed to crack the American market (although his single ‘Living Doll’ promised much when it reached No. 30 on the US charts in 1959).

Sir Cliff is hoping that a residency in Las Vegas will increase his chances of success with US audiences.

“Acts like Elvis and Little Richard were the reason I started, so it would mean a great deal to have at least one success over there,” Sir Cliff recently told Women’s Weekly magazine. “I’ve had nine Top 30 hits in America but never an identity. If I could just have one big hit I’d feel so much satisfaction.”

He added: “Olivia Newton-John and I have talked about joining forces to find a Las Vegas venue to perform at. Elton John recently told me: ‘I can’t understand why you never cracked it’. And I can’t either. It’s the land of rock ‘n’ roll – like Wimbledon is to tennis.”
