British singer-songwriter Paul Carrack’s four-decade career is to be celebrated in a new TV documentary which will be screened on BBC4 on October 12 (10pm UK time).

Titled The Man With The Golden Voice, the TV documentary features interviews with Carrack’s musical colleagues Chris Difford, Mike Rutherford, Timothy B Schmit and Nick Lowe.

The programme documents Carrack’s journey from his Sheffield roots to become a highly-respected solo performer, a member of Ace and Mike & the Mechanics, and a collaborator with legends such as Roger Waters, Roxy Music, Elton John, Ringo Starr and B.B. King.

The TV tribute follows the release of Carrack’s latest blue-eyed soul album Good Feeling on September 24. It features 12 classy tracks, including several brand new songs, a collaboration with Squeeze’s Chris Difford (titled ‘Marmalade Moon’), a new version of Nick Lowe’s ‘From Now On’ (first recorded on Carrack’s Suburban Voodoo album 30 years ago), and an excellent cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Lucky Town track ‘If I Should Fall Behind’.

Carrack produced Good Feeling himself and plays most of the instruments on the album. His son Jack, now a member of his touring band, plays drums on the album.

Sir Elton John, 64, has revealed that he would like singer/actor Justin Timberlake to play him in Rocketman, the forthcoming film about his illustrious life and musical career – and Timberlake is reportedly taking the offer “very seriously”.

Timberlake is said to have impressed Sir Elton with his performance as a 1970s Elton in the music video for ‘This Train Don’t Stop There Anymore’ in 2002.

With a script written by Billy Elliott author Lee Hall, Rocketman has been described as a biographical musical fantasy and a “radically different kind of biopic”.

Elton John and Leon Russell together onstage for BBC Electric Proms in October

September 13, 2010

Sir Elton John is set to appear alongside legendary US singer-songwriter Leon Russell at the BBC Electric Proms in October.

The duo will perform live – at separate pianos – on Thursday, October 28 at London’s Roundhouse. The set will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2, with highlights from the concert forming the centre piece of A Night In With Sir Elton John on BBC Two on October 30. The “night in” will also include behind-the-scenes footage from the Roundhouse gig and a new documentary about Sir Elton’s life and music.

Sir Elton – who has sold over 250 million records in a career spanning four decades – is expected to play classic tracks from his back catalogue. He will also perform new songs from his forthcoming studio album with Leon Russell, The Union, which will be released by Mercury Records on October 25.

“I’m delighted to be kicking off this year’s BBC Electric Proms,” says Sir Elton, “particularly as I’ll be joined on stage by Leon who is one of my musical heroes. The performance will feature other very special guests and some memorable moments.”

Leon Russell, now 68, collaborated with Sir Elton in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was also responsible for classic songs such as ‘Delta Lady’ (a huge hit for Joe Cocker in 1969) and The Carpenters’ Grammy-nominated hit ‘Superstar’ in 1971.

The Elton John/Leon Russell album, The Union, features guest appearances by Brian Wilson, Booker T, Don Was and Neil Young. It was produced by T-Bone Burnett and is accompanied by documentary footage shot by filmmaker Cameron Crowe.

Elvis Costello turns TV chat show host

July 14, 2008

Elvis Costello is set to follow in the footsteps of Michael Parkinson and Jonathan Ross with his own ‘music and chat’ TV show, titled ‘Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…’.

The 13-part, one-hour TV show – recorded in New York – is expected to be broadcast later this year in the USA and Canada, and on Channel 4 in the UK. It will feature Elvis chatting and performing with special guests Sir Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, and former US president Bill Clinton.

Other guests being lined up are said to include Elvis Presley’s former guitarist James Burton, legendary producer, pianist, songwriter, arranger, singer Allen Toussaint, and jazz guitarist and composer Pat Metheny.

The show’s producers reportedly approached Costello to host the show after seeing him successfully fill in for David Letterman a couple of years ago. Costello, who lives in New York and Vancouver with his wife Diana Krall, agreed to give it a shot.

According to the production company, one of the early shows will see Costello performing with Elton John, while in another episode saxophone-playing Bill Clinton will discuss the influence of music on his career.

“I’ve always been curious about the things that make people motivated to make music throughout their life,” said Costello. “It’s not a show about trying to uncover a dark secret that somebody’s got hidden. Rather, it’s their opportunity to talk about some things that they don’t get to talk about in the regular showbiz interview.”
